| In Memoriam: John Deaver Drinko 1921-2008 |
We report with sadness that John Deaver Drinko passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30. He was 86. John was a distinguished graduate; the former managing partner of Baker and Hostetler; a corporate and community leader; and a philanthropist. As a child in St. Marys, W.Va., John worked several jobs to support his family, establishing a pattern of hard work, determination to succeed, and loyalty that continued always. Even at age 86, John was serving on a number of corporate boards, was a trustee of six foundations, and kept in touch with his law partners. And, always loyal, he called here regularly to check on how the Moritz College was doing. (Read More)

| Buckeye Nation: See Where OSU Law Alumni Are Living, Working; Add Yourself! |
One thing is for sure: Ohio State law students come from all over and go all over when they complete their studies. “Buckeye Nation” is certainly not limited to Columbus, or even Ohio. Moritz alumni are painting the country Scarlet and Gray in places like Chicago, New York, Albuquerque, San Francisco, Billings, Mont., and everywhere in between.
The College has put together a clickable map that will show our alumni, students, and prospective students where OSU law degrees have taken many Ohio State Law graduates. We contacted some of the 9,000 alumni scattered across the nation, asked a few questions, and received enthusiastic responses. We also questioned current students. (Read More)

| Frank Placenti ’79: A Ray of Sunshine in His Community |
Frank Placenti, an Ohio native, moved to Arizona after graduating from Ohio State with both his undergraduate and law degrees. While the fantastic weather and involvement in a burgeoning economy originally drew him to Phoenix, he’s spent the last 28 years anchoring himself and his family in the community by championing local organizations and ventures. “I didn’t know a soul when I moved to Phoenix,” he explained, “but the people have been very good to me and I have tried to return the favor. There was a time when lawyers were expected to be leaders in their communities, and I still believe that’s the right answer.” (Read More) |

In 2007, the Supreme Court ended its term with a historic ruling on voluntary integration in public schools. The Court’s decision has sparked a national conversation on race in public policy – a conversation that will continue at the Ohio State Law Journal Annual Symposium, “The School Desegregation Cases and the Uncertain Future of Racial Equality,” on Feb. 21-22. Top legal scholars, social scientists, and education experts will gather at Moritz to collectively explore the potential impact of this decision on the pursuit of racial equality in public schools and beyond. Distinguished speakers include Erwin Chemerinsky, Duke University School of Law, and Charles Ogletree, Harvard Law School. All are encouraged to attend. Pending approval, 10 Ohio CLE credits can be obtained. For more information, please visit: moritzlaw.osu.edu/lawjournal/symposium. (Read About Other Upcoming Symposiums) |
