| Patty Hernandez ’92: Helping Ohio’s Migrant Workers |
Patty Hernandez ’92 has a passion for helping others. In particular, she has successfully built a 16-year career in immigration law, working to aid migrant farm workers in Ohio. As an attorney in the Toledo, Ohio, office of Advocates for Basic Legal Equality Inc. (ABLE), Patty works to improve the rights and conditions for farm workers in Ohio.
Patty knew she had a strong desire to work in public interest law when she graduated from law school at Ohio State and started at ABLE in 1992. “At that time ABLE was one of the leading legal service organizations in the country providing services to migrant farm workers,” she said. (Read More) |
| Criminal Law Journal Launches New Web Feature for Practitioners |
| The Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law has launched an innovative new web feature designed to spark dialogue among criminal law practitioners around the country. "These practitioners are, for the most part, an untapped audience," said 3L Dan Maurer, an executive editor for the OSJCL. "We hope to provide insight and spur discussion regarding issues that practitioners are encountering every day."

| Kristen Henry ’07: Making Equal Justice Work |
After graduating from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, Kristen Henry ’07 began a two-year fellowship with Equal Justice Works (EJW) in Columbus. EJW, which began in 1992, is designed to address the shortage of attorneys working on behalf of traditionally underserved populations and causes. Kristen’s project with EJW is designed to help provide representation to juveniles incarcerated in the Ohio Department of Youth Services prisons as well as raise awareness of the need for representation. | Schwartz Lecture Features Professor Lawrence Susskind |
On Thursday, April 10, at noon in the Saxbe Auditorium, the Moritz College of Law is pleased to host Lawrence Susskind as keynote speaker for the annual Schwartz Lecture on Dispute Resolution. Professor Susskind serves as Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at MIT, vice-chair for instruction at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and founder of the Consensus Building Institute. PBRG will present a symposium entitled, “Healthcare Law and Policy: How Our Legal Community Can Help Improve The Health of the Underserved.”
The keynote speaker is Eleanor D. Kinney, founding director of the Indiana University School of Law’s internationally recognized William S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health, and one of the nation’s leading experts on health law.
Four hours of Ohio continuing legal education (CLE) credits have been approved by the Supreme Court of Ohio.

| Student Profile: From NASA to Moritz |
For most of us, the closest we have ever been to NASA is watching a televised launch of the space shuttle or reading a news story about one of the agency’s countless feats. However, before 1L Nathan Colvin started at the Moritz College of Law in August, NASA was a part of his daily regime.
After obtaining an undergraduate degree from Miami University in history and political science in 2001, Nathan ventured to Washington, D.C., to assist in President George W. Bush’s re-election campaign. While working on the presidential campaign, he was responsible for a grass roots organization in Butler County, Ohio. This included recruiting volunteers, staffing phone banks, organizing door-to-door canvassing, voter registration, signs, letters to the editor, and coordinating political rallies.

| Five Questions with Professor Martha Chamallas |
Following graduation from Louisiana State University Law Center, Professor Chamallas clerked for the Honorable Charles Clark of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and served as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor, Civil Rights Division.
Prior to joining the Moritz College of Law in 2002, Professor Chamallas was on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She has taught at Louisiana State University Law Center, the University of Iowa College of Law, Washington University School of Law, and the University of Richmond School of Law. She is a leading scholar in a number of fields, including employment law, torts, and legal issues affecting women. (Read Professor Chamallas' answers to five questions) |
