| We are pleased to present the May issue of This
Month @ Moritz, featuring alumni who have used their personal
passion and their law degrees to carve out distinctive, unusual careers
that fit them to a tee. Also featured are three Moritz parents, looking
for balance between family life and work life. We hope these articles
will inspire you to share your own
stories—personal and professional—with the college. |
| Finding Happiness in Helping Others: Moritz Alumni
as Spiritual Leaders |
The
phrase "lawyers as leaders" typically invokes images of managing partners,
elected officials, judges, or chief executive officers. Less common
is the image of a lawyer as the leader of a religious organization.
Inspired by a special calling, Todd McKenney '89, Sylvia "Becky" Robbins-Penniman
'79, and Richard "Rich" Nathan '80 represent a sample of Moritz alumni
engaged in leadership positions within the ministry. (Read

Halle Butler Hara ’98, Liza Larky ’99
& Tracy Kozicki Stratford ’98:
Finding a Balance Between Career and Family
|

Every attorney who becomes a parent has probably wrestled, from time
to time, about how best to balance cultivating a career and raising
children. For every parent, there is a slightly different, very personal,
answer to that question. Halle Butler Hara (left) has one child and
another on the way; her part-time job as a law clerk allows her to
spend time at home while keeping her foot in the door of the legal
world. Liza Larky (center) decided to put her law career on hold to
stay home with her kids. For Tracy Kozicki Stratford (right), a mother
of two and a full-time associate in the litigation group at Jones
Day, strategizing each week’s plan with her husband is much
like strategizing the work-up of a large case with her colleagues.
Balancing parenthood and a career means something different for every
person. This is how three moms strike that balance in their lives.

| Living with Light and Shadow: Lawyer and Artist
Mark Sotak ’90 |
Mark
Sotak ’90 still has dreams about law school: “I’m
being questioned about the applicability of the Erie Doctrine. I still
don’t have the answers!” Today, however, Mark studies
“light, shadow and color, instead of interpretations of statutes
and legislative histories.” Mark has embarked on a career in
painting, instead of practicing law. His path in getting there is
as remarkable as is his artwork—and his method. (Read

Her |
