Alumni Involvement Makes Job Fairs in DC and Chicago Successful

Job fairs held in Washington, DC and Chicago this summer gave Moritz students the opportunity to interview with numerous employers from both the private and public sectors in those cities. Thanks to the overwhelming support of Moritz alumni and the hard work of the Career Services staff, a total of 18 employers participated in the fairs, and more than 30 students attended each fair.

"I was delighted to help give Moritz students the chance to show how good they are," says Fred Block '99, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis.

DC Job Fair"When I joined the Moritz Career Services staff in early 2006, one of my challenges was to develop an off-campus job fair in DC to be held in mid-July. My first step was to contact a number of alumni, all of whom were very receptive to this initiative," says Assistant Director for Career Services Linda Jones, .

Linda took advantage of an offer from Jennifer Hetzel Hallman '06, who starts work for the IRS this Fall, who was "happy to help and contribute my knowledge and experience of job searching in the DC area to support and foster networking opportunities for students."

Other alumni who helped make the DC job fair possible thanks to their insight, influence or interviewing were Allyson Rusnak '02, U.S. Department of Transportation; Eric Rusnak '03, Kirkpatrick & Lockhart; Susan Block '99, Securities Exchange Commission; Jennifer Cihon '97, U.S. Department of Justice; Kathleen Lyon '98, National Labor Relations Board; Brad Preamble '04, Federal Aviation Administration; Ted Ramirez '76, Venable; Rebecca Woods '98, Ross Dixon & Bell; Tracey Saulsberry '05, Weil, Gotshal & Manges; and Nicole Crum '03, Baker & McKenzie.

Supporting the effort was C. William O'Neill Professor of Law and Judicial Administration Peter P. Swire, who provided employer leads and encouraged students participating in the Moritz DC Summer Program, which he directs, to participate in the program. The job fair was scheduled to coincide with the conclusion of the Moritz DC Summer Program to make it as convenient as possible for those students to participate.

Students also had the opportunity to interact with other alumni from the DC-area at a reception held that evening at Squire Sanders & Dempsey, thanks to host Alan Briggs '67.

Assistant Directors of Career Services Kelly Boggs, who spearheaded the Chicago job fair, and Keyomah Shakoor '05 returned from that event on August 9. "Not only were our students excited about interviewing with excellent employers, but they also enjoyed meeting and hearing about the careers of other Moritz grads at the reception for Chicago-area alumni, which took place after the job fair," observes Kelly.

Moritz Law is grateful to the following alumni, whose efforts for the Chicago job fair made it a success: Keith Hult '76, Littler Mendelson; Eric Reeves '98, McDermott, Will & Emery; Peter Krebs '03, Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom; Peter Ellis '98 and William Gantz '90, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary; George Thomson '86, City of Chicago; Marta Stein '88, McGuireWoods; and Frank Top '88, Chapman and Cutler.

"We are so appreciative of the large number of alumni who provided introductions and referrals in both Washington, DC and Chicago, even if their organizations could not participate in the job fairs this year," says Assistant Dean of Career Services and External Relations Pam Lombardi.

Next year, the Career Services Office will be joining a consortium of law schools holding job fairs in DC, Chicago and New York City.

"In response to student demand, we are constantly working to increase job opportunities in national markets," Pam says, "and we couldn't do it without the support of our wonderful alumni."
