The Honorable Howard M. Metzenbaum '41 is Special Guest at Upcoming Cleveland-Area Alumni Gathering
The phrase
"pulling yourself up by the bootstraps" would apply
to the early life of Sen. Howard M. Metzenbaum (Ret.) '41,
if only he'd had the money for bootstraps. Growing up
in Depression-era Cleveland and spending his college years at
The Ohio State University and what now is the Michael E. Moritz
College of Law, he learned the value of hard work and determination
– values he applied throughout his life as a lawyer, businessman,
and public servant that helped him commit his life to pulling
up others. He will be the College's special guest at 5:30
p.m., Thursday Oct. 16, at a Moritz alumni gathering to be held
at The Club in Key Center, 127 Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.

Meet Kim Skaggs '93, 2003 Moritz Public Service Award Winner
Kim M. Skaggs
'93, left with Dean Rogers, jokes that the reason she
quit being a dentist to become a lawyer is that she wanted to
be in a profession that was disliked more than dentistry. If
that were the case, it's one of the few times in her life
she failed. In the years since she graduated, Kim has become
both admired and respected for her commitment to public service
and equal access to justice. In recognition of her accomplishments,
the Moritz College of Law Alumni Society awarded Kim its 2003
Public Service Award on Sept. 30 at its annual Public Service
Day. (learn more) |
Grateful Students Initiate Scholarship to Honor Professor Shipman
Beyond the
ever-present pipe and the always-amusing "Shipmanisms"
is one of the keenest legal minds in the country. A gifted teacher,
Morgan E. Shipman, the John W. Bricker Professor of Law, has
been recognized by students as OSU's outstanding professor an
unprecedented five times since he began teaching at Moritz in
1968. The latest evidence of his lasting impact comes from a
group of grateful alumni who have raised nearly $100,000 to
create an endowed scholarship in his name. (learn

Brian Burns '97 to Be Honored by OSU's Alumni Association for Uncommon Early Career Achievement and by Moritz for Outstanding Service
On Monday,
September 10, 2001, Brian Burns '97 hosted newly appointed
Dean Nancy Rogers and a group of 30 New York-area Moritz law
alumni for an early evening reception on the 30th floor of his
then law firm Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen, & Hamilton. As the
rain cleared at dusk, the group enjoyed a panoramic, and unknowing,
last view of the World Trade Center next door. On Tuesday, September
11, 2001, that reception was overshadowed with tears, grief
and pain, but like many other Moritz alumni – Brian demonstrated
the ability to survive and overcome obstacles in the most difficult
of circumstances that day and in the aftermath of 9/11. (learn
