Andrea Shemberg '97: Quixote in Pragmatist's Clothing
Like Don Quixote, Andrea Shemberg '97 is an idealist bent
on righting wrongs. Unlike Cervantes' hero, she is practical
and effective. Take, for example, her current work with Amnesty
UK opposing a pipeline contract between the Turkish government
and BP. In addition to lobbying international lenders to refrain
from supporting the project in its current form, she, along
with her colleagues at Amnesty have been meeting with BP to
discuss how the agreements could be improved with respect to
international human rights law. (learn

Moot Courtroom Renovation Committee Declares Victory
Co-Chairs Frank A. Ray '73 and John C. McDonald '61
and a committed Moot Courtroom Renovation Committee have declared
victory. The drive to raise $330,000 to bring the moot courtroom
into the 21st century through the addition of state-of-the-art
technology is complete and construction will begin during the
2004 summer break. (learn

Artistry in Motion: The Circuitous Career of Larry Thompson '78
Ringling College of Art and Design President Larry Thompson
'78 likes to call himself a "guidance counselor's
nightmare." If that's true, then guidance counselors
should be dreaming of a nightmare like him. Sure, he admits
it has been hard to pin him down to one job, but his wanderlust,
in a roundabout way, has benefited everyone from the students
and staff at The Ohio State University to fans of Little Richard.

"Trial by Jury" and Professor Whaley Prepare for Grand Finale
Sadly, the College's tradition of quinquennial productions
of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera "Trial by Jury"
will end with the final curtain of the March 2004 performance.
Its director, Professor
Douglas Whaley will retire in May ending a 27-year run as
both a Moritz professor/director and one of the nation's
most respected legal educators. (learn

Carl Smallwood '80 Honored for University Advocacy
Carl Smallwood will receive The Ohio State University Dan L.
Heinlen Award for his superb record of University Advocacy at
the Alumni Association Awards Ceremony on November 7 at the
Hyatt Regency Columbus. It is the second time in less than a
decade that Carl has been singled out for University-wide honors.
In 1994, he received the Alumni Association's Josephine
Sitterle Failer Award in part for chairing the Columbus Bar
Association's law school liaison committee, which created
formal mentorship and practice interview programs for Columbus-area
law students. Quite simply, Carl gets things done – important
things. (learn
