Lawrence Lecture to focus on negotiation ethics

The difficulties of learning and understanding negotiation ethics will be the focus of this year’s annual Lawrence Negotiation Lecture, scheduled for Sept. 19.

Art Hinshaw, a clinical professor of law at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, has gleaned data from years of empirical research with law students and lawyers. In his talk, “Learning and Understanding Negotiation Ethics,” Hinshaw will share his findings that a legal education is not as helpful as expected for analyzing negotiation ethics issues, and he will offer a hypothesis of why that is the case.

In addition to serving as director of the Lodestar Mediation Clinic, Hinshaw teaches Negotiation at ASU. He is active in the ADR community, having served on several academic and professional committees at the state and national levels. Currently, he serves as a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Mediator Ethical Guidance, is a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri School of Law, and is a contributor to Indisputably, the ADR Professors Blog.

Hinshaw will present the 2013 Lawrence Negotiation Lecture beginning at noon Sept. 19 in the William B. Saxbe Law Auditorium at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. The lecture is open to the public, and no registration is needed.

The lecture is presented by The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law Program on Dispute Resolution and the lecture’s namesake, James K.L. Lawrence ’65, a member with Frost Brown Todd in Cincinnati who has practiced labor-relations and employment law for more than 30 years.

Lawrence is a skilled advocate in arbitration and an astute negotiator in collective bargaining and settlement discussions. He has pursued vigorously the sustained study of dispute resolution materials at programs throughout the country and has blended that study and practice into teaching courses in negotiation and mediation at Moritz.
