Despite Tough Job Market, Moritz Students Still Having Success

Alan Michaels

Alan Michaels

As we’re just a week away from the 2010 Hooding Ceremony, I would like to take a moment to highlight some of the accomplishments of our newly minted alumni. As you know, the recession has dealt a body blow to the legal job market. Yet our students continued to work extremely hard, stayed creative, and, with the help of our Career Services Office, had many successes entering the legal profession, with more to come. I wanted to share a handful of these success stories from the Class of 2010.

Abby André will join the U.S. Department of Justice Honors Program where she will focus on environmental law. Abby is looking forward to serving her country on environmental issues that play an important role in the lives of so many people. A Columbus native, Abby received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was deeply involved in student organizations while at Moritz. This school year, Abby was the executive editor of the Ohio State Law Journal and last year was part of Moritz’s national championship team at the Ruby R. Vale Corporate Law Moot Court Competition. I know we will soon start receiving word of Abby’s accomplishments in Washington, D.C.

Grant Bokerman will head to New York City and begin work with Debevoise & Plimpton. Grant will join the firm’s Corporate Department, and he’s excited to tackle what he knows will be a challenging new position. (I’m a Debevoise alumnus myself from the firm’s summer program). Grant, originally of Napoleon, Ohio, took an active role in the College’s Program on Law and Leadership, which started in his 1L year. He was a member of the Ohio State Law Journal, was a 2009 finalist in the College’s James K.L. Lawrence Negotiations Competition, and his ABA negotiations team was a regional finalist last school year.

Wen Zhou Butcher, of Gates Mills, Ohio, will become in-house counsel for Emerson Climate Technologies in Sidney, Ohio, a subsidiary of Emerson Electric Company. Wen, a dual-degree student who will soon earn her MBA from Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business, was searching for a position that would leverage her law and business degrees with her language skills (she’s fluent in Mandarin). This position does all of those things, while also providing an opportunity for Wen to engage in international practice early in her career.

These are just three of the many Class of 2010 stories of which we are so proud. Similar records and accomplishments are found throughout the graduating class. Of course, job searches are ongoing for many of our students, and our faculty and staff continue to implement new programs and discover new opportunities to best launch our students into their careers. Equipped with training and experience, our graduates are poised and eager to make a difference to firms, agencies, departments, and other organizations worldwide. Thanks are due to our alumni community, which has generously provided information, resources, networks, and leads for our students. If you know of internship or job opportunities for Moritz graduates or students, please contact Pam Lombardi at lombardi.2@osu.edu or Linda Jones at jones.2609@osu.edu, our co-directors of Career Services.

I hope you’ll join me in welcoming our newest class of Moritz alumni. I am sure you will be as proud of them as I am.

Sincerely,

Alan C. Michaels
