Charles C. Warner ’70 was awarded the 2010 Columbus Bar Service Medal in recognition of his long history of distinguished service to the Columbus Bar Association. Warner, a partner with Porter Wright, has been committed to the Columbus Bar for 40 years, and has served as president of both the Bar and the Bar Foundation. The Bar Service Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the organization. (June, 2010)

Clifford E. Haines ’70, president of the Philadelphia law firm of Haines & Associates, will became immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association at the conclusion of the organization’s Annual Meeting May 14 in Hershey. (May, 2010)

Richard G. Terapak '71, partner in the Columbus office of Porter Wright, was recognized as a leading lawyer in the area of health care by Chambers USA in 2013. He chairs the firm's health care practice group. (September, 2013)

Harry D. Cornett Jr. ’71, a partner in the Cleveland office of Tucker Ellis LLP, was named “Lawyer of the Year” in the area of legal malpractice law for defendants in The Best Lawyers in America 2014. A fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a registered patent attorney, Cornett has tried many civil and criminal cases to verdict before judges and juries in Ohio and other states. Richard Lynn Mann '71 has started a lecture series on the unintended dangers of the cyber world after more than 37 years as outside state counsel for the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators. In a little more than two years, his series has been given to more than 35,000 middle and high school students, more than 4,000 teachers and administrators, and 1,000 parents. Mann is a sole practitioner in Westerville, Ohio. (March, 2013)

John W. Hilbert II ’71 was named a 2012 Best Lawyers Lawyer of the Year in the category of corporate law in Toledo, Ohio. Hilbert is a partner in the corporate and real estate practice groups in the Toledo office of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP. James M. Schottenstein ’71 was proud to welcome his daughter, Irene A. Schottenstein ’10, as an alumna of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law at the 2010 Hooding Ceremony in May. “It is hard to fathom that 38 years have passed since I received my own hood,” James Schottenstein said, “and as I sat in the audience I had a strong sense of déjà vu.” (June, 2010)

Steven M. Nobil ’72, regional managing partner of the Cleveland office of Fisher & Phillips LLP, was listed in the 2014Ohio Super Lawyers list. Nobil devotes his practice to representing public- and private-sector employers in various areas of labor law, including union organizing campaigns, contract negotiations, arbitrations, union avoidance, supervisory training, and other related labor advice and counsel. Robert Messham '72 has left the bench in Miamisburg Municipal Court, after deciding not to seek re-election to the municipal judgeship. Messham still plans to work as a visiting judge, starting Feb. 1-3, 2012, in place of friend and colleague, Kettering Municipal Court Judge Robert Moore. (January, 2012)

Mary Ellen Fairfield ‘72, a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP’s Columbus office, was named an Ohio Super Lawyer for 2012 by Super Lawyers for her eighth consecutive year. Fairfield, a member of the firm's litigation group, was named the "Columbus Litigation - Labor & Employment Lawyer of the Year." She served as adjunct professor of Trial Practice at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law from 1985-1995. (October, 2011)

Bruce E. Cryder ’72 was named the Lexington, Ky., National Resources Lawyer of the Year for 2011 by Best Lawyers. Cryder is a member in the Lexington office of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald PLLC, and is a member of the firm’s Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Practice Group. His practice focuses on mineral, energy and natural resources law, with a particular emphasis on the coal industry. (November, 2010)

David A. Gradwohl ’72 recently co-authored a law review article titled “Equity Receiverships for Ponzi Schemes,” which was published in the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. The article explains the complicated steps that victims of Ponzi schemes must take in order to maximize recovery of their investments. Gradwohl is a partner in the Blue Bell, Penn., office of Fox Rothschild. (August, 2010)

William M. Owens ’72 was elected to serve a three-year term as District 9 representative on the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association. Owens is a partner in the Coshocton, Ohio, law firm of Owens & Manning. He practices mainly domestic, criminal, real estate, and probate law matters. Charles J. Faruki ’73, one of the founders of Faruki Ireland & Cox P.L.L., has been named to the 2014 Ohio Super Lawyers list. He is a trial lawyer who focuses on business litigation. Faruki also is a past president of the Dayton Bar Association and the Dayton Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and he has chaired the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on Continuing Legal Education, the Bar Examination Committee of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and the Board of Governors of the Antitrust Law Section of the Ohio State Bar Association. Chernoski '76 was selected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the nation's largest veterans association for active duty, National Guard, reserve, former and retired officers and their families. Chernoski served on active duty as a JAG officer assigned to Naval Legal Service Office, Philadelphia, and Naval Support Activity, Philadelphia. Upon his release from active duty in 1980, he affiliated with the Navy Reserve, serving in various units until he retired in 1996. Chernoski worked for the New Jersey Attorney General's Division of Law for more than two decades, concentrating on administrative law and charitable trust matters. Vicki Sproat '78 has been named to the executive council of the Florida Bar Trial Lawyers Section, which provides a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas leading to the improvement of individual trial ability. Ray Persons ’78 has been selected to receive The Ohio State University's 2012 John B. Gerlach Sr. Development Volunteer Award, which recognizes high-level involvement with development activities as a volunteer. Persons serves on the University’s Foundation Board and is a recent chair of Moritz’s National Council, an advisory group for the dean that provides valued counsel on plans and programs at Moritz and assists the College with fundraising efforts. He and his wife, Wendy, endowed a merit scholarship named in honor of their children in the hopes they would be inspired by their parents’ example and continue to grow the scholarship through the next generation. Dan A. Bailey '78, a member of Bailey Cavalieri, LLC and co-author of Liability of Corporate Officers and Directors, accepted the Burton Award for Legal Achievement at a ceremony on June 11. The firm was the winner in the 2012 competition in the category of Best Law Firm Encyclopedic Handbook. The two-volume treatise, published by Lexis Nexis, addresses issues relating to claims against and protections for directors and officers of public, private, and nonprofit companies. Tom Sykes '79 recently joined Greenberg Traurig, LLP, as a shareholder in its Chicago office. He has a nationwide practice that is focused upon federal tax controversies, including litigtion in all forums. In recent years, Sykes has been especially active litigating tax-refund cases addressing whether FICA tax is due upon stipends paid to medical residents -- an issue upon which the IRS recently surrendered for taxable periods before April 1, 2005.
