Dan Sandman '73 Named 2004 Moritz Distinguished Alumnus
Present to honor Dan as the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus was classmate and long-time friend John Mills '73. John and Dan were lawyers together at Marathon Oil and John was a fellow USX officer in the 90's.
John says, "Dan and I have worked on many issues together over the past 30 years and Dan has always approached those issues with great organization of thought, creativity, energy, enthusiasm, and the highest degree of ethical conduct."
Friend Susan E. Brown '71 said she wouldn't have missed an opportunity to honor Dan. Jeff Benson '76, a Marathon Oil attorney and friend, drove down from Findlay, Ohio.
Also on hand was Lawrence D. Stanley Professor of Law Greg Travalio, who worked with Dan to coordinate the Moritz Corporate Counsel Conference in 2003 and to improve communication among Moritz Barton Scholarship recipients. In addition to calling Dan a friend, Professor Travalio says Dan is a "consummate corporate attorney who represents the apex of professional and personal achievement."
OSU legend Archie Griffin and OSU Provost Barbara Snyder participated in the recognition ceremony. Provost Snyder worked with Dan on the OSU Athletic Council and like most who work with Dan, she became a friend. As chairman of the OSU Alumni Association, Dan led the search team that selected OSU football legend Archie Griffin to replace Dan L. Heinlen as President/CEO of the OSU Alumni Association. Both Archie and Dan spoke of their respect for Dan and his commitment to Ohio State.
As she presented the award, Dean Nancy Rogers talked about the attributes of leadership and how well-reflected they have been at every step of Dan's career. She said that despite the demands of being an officer in one of the world's largest corporations, Dan found time to chair OSU's Alumni Association, serve as a trustee of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and on the board of the Carnegie Museum, as well as chair the Pittsburgh-area United Way Campaign. She talked about how she had come to rely on Dan's advice as a member of the College's National Alumni Council and how critical Dan's involvement had been in the success of the College's first Corporate Counsel Conference.

In accepting the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Dan said he was honored to be included with former winners, among them philanthropist J. Gib Reese '52 and Moritz' Distinguished Jurist in Residence Robert M. Duncan. He said how grateful he was for the Barton Scholarship that helped finance his legal education, and gave special thanks to his wife, whose "Bonnie Sandman Scholarship" put him through law school.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given to graduates whose accomplishments merit special recognition. It is given annually to a Moritz graduate for exceptional achievement or outstanding service to the College or community. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2005 Award.
