Homeland Security Taps Moritz Alumnus for Top Post
Matt Mayer '97 has been named Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor for the Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP) in the Department of Homeland Security. ODP is the primary office responsible for providing training, funds, purchase of equipment, support for planning and execution of exercises, technical assistance, and other support to assist states and localities in preventing, planning for, and responding to acts of terrorism. He recently took time from his busy schedule to return to Moritz and visit with students (pictured above).
Matt came to OPD from Colorado where he served as Governor Bill Owens' Deputy Director for the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). DORA oversees more than 590,000 licensed professionals -- from accountants to veterinarians -- and regulates industries including banking, securities, insurance, telecommunications, and energy.
In 2003, the German Marshall Fund recognized Matt as an emerging national leader by awarding him a Marshall Memorial Fellowship. The Fellowship will enable Matt to spend three weeks in Europe meeting with high-level European leaders on issues ranging from post-9/11 homeland security to the foreign policy challenges of maintaining an Atlantic alliance.
Following graduation from Moritz, Matt was in private practice representing businesses in matters ranging from employment discrimination to high-profile product liability actions. In addition to a wide range of volunteer leadership posts with cultural, social, and civic entities, Matt served as a keynote speaker at several events including the Small Business Administration's Business Economic Development Day and at the National Civil Rights Training Conference on civil rights exercise and enforcement in a post-9/11 world.
At Moritz, Matt served as editor-in-chief of the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution and was recognized as a Public Service Fellow at graduation. In addition, he earned the ABA-BNA Excellence in Labor and Employment Law Award and the Journal's Past Editors' Award. More recently, he was named one of "Forty Under 40," a list of top Colorado leaders compiled by the Denver Business Journal.
Matt is now living in Arlington, Virginia with wife Jessica and their two-year old daughter Madeleine. Friends and classmates can reach Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
