United Airlines CEO John W. "Jack" Creighton '57 Welcomes Moritz Scholars
Creighton has a long and distinguished career as one of the nation's top executives. He served as president and chief executive officer of Weyerhaeuser Company, an international forest products company from 1991 through 1997. He joined the United Airlines Board of Directors in 1998 and was elevated to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 2001. He provided critical leadership in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks and served through September, 2002.
Creighton's career is emblematic of the Moritz Scholarship's emphasis on developing men and women who will be among the nation's top leaders. The Michael E. Moritz Merit Scholarship Program, which provides full in-state tuition and additional aid to 30 Ohio State law students each year, was established by the late Michael E. Moritz '61 in 2001.
In addition to financial aid, Moritz Scholars are assigned mentors who provide advice and counsel. Most mentors are Moritz alumni and many were the friends and professional associates of the late Moritz. Dean Nancy H. Rogers and Moritz collaborated in the selection of mentors. All are successful in their respective fields and committed to mentoring law students throughout their education. Dean Rogers hosted the dinner which provided an opportunity for Moritz Scholars to meet their mentors as well as Lou Ann Moritz who will oversee the philanthropic legacy of her late husband.
