J.D. Admissions
Transfer of Credit
As early as possible after a transfer student is admitted, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs evaluates the student's law transcript and determines the number of credits to be awarded for work completed at another law school. The Assistant Dean exercises discretion in awarding credit for courses completed at another institution. That discretion has historically been exercised in favor of awarding credit for any course required by another law school, whether or not the course is required of first-year students at Moritz. A prospective transfer student may contact the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for additional information about the awarding of transfer credit for a particular course.
A transfer student will not be required to complete a course required of first-year students at Moritz if that student has completed a course in which substantially the same doctrine is taught, regardless of the number of credits assigned to the course. The total number of transfer credits from another ABA-approved law school is capped at the number required of first-year students at Moritz. That number is currently 31.
The Moritz College of Law limits the number of credits accepted from the completion of the first-year at a non-ABA-approved law school to one-third the total number required for graduation from the College of Law. That number is currently 29.
